Canton-i 香港粥麵家 : Since when it becomes a MONTHLY visit?

Come on! Saturday somemore got to work leh! That's why we treated ourselves at Canton-i for a 'high-ca' lunch last Saturday.

This time we got the chance to sit at the VIP area (nah, VIP simply because we came in a group of 10 pax lah! :) )

Hmm...this ceiling lighting is elegant but too dark for us to see properly what stays in our bowls. :)
I wonder if the similar one found at that SouthBay show unit's living room would be that dim too?!

The porridge remains the safest dish to order. The best still out of all.

順德鱗魚球粥 (RM11.80) Carp Fish Balls & Lettuce Congee .

皮蛋瘦肉粥 (RM10.80) Salted Lean Meat & Century Egg Congee . Do not add anymore soya sauce ha!

北菇滑雞粥 (RM11.80) Braised Soya Sauce Chicken with Congee. The 'wak kai' is true, really 'wak'!!

滷水蛋豆腐 (RM6.80) Teochew-style Marinated Beancurd and Egg. Not as fragant as the local hawkers one.

If you can accept their noodles, then noodle dishes could be your better choice if you don't mind paying triple price of what you can get elsewhere. *wink* :)
豬手面 (乾) (RM12.80) Pork Knuckles Noodles .

雙拼撈麵 (乾) (RM13.80) Wonton Noodles with 2 Combinations
(Wonton, Sui Kow Dumpling, Honey-glazed Roast Pork, Roast Pork Belly, Japanese Pork Rib, Pork Knuckle Cantonese Shredded Meat, Beef Brisket, Mushroom).

雲吞+叉燒 (Wanton + Char Siew)

叉燒+燒南 (Char Siew + Siew Nam)

If you want to have a filling meal with minimal spending at Canton-i, the roasted meat rice dishes below is is a good choice!

燒味雙拼飯 (RM12.80) Two Combinations of Roast Meat with Plain Rice
( Roast Duck, Honey-glazed Roast Pork, Roast Pork Belly, Roast Chicken, Soya Sauce Chicken, Cuttlefish).

叉燒 + 燒南 (Char Siew + Siew Nam)

燒鴨 +叉燒 (Siew Ngap + Char Siew)

招牌蛋塔 (RM5.00) Egg Tart. Qualified to be named as their 'chiew pai' egg tart loh.

Canton-i menu is completed with their very ladylike desserts, just like their interior decoration.

鮮橙燉蛋 (RM8.00) Double-boiled Egg and Orange Custard

山水豆腐花 (RM3.00) Tau Fu Far

15% service charge applies somemore! Argh!

p/s: I learnt this from another factory worker. Before placing order, they return the wet napkin to save RM1 each.

中華小廚 (Zhonghua Restaurant)

中華小廚 (Zhong Hua Restaurant)@ Midlands Park Centre

"Hmm..........it must be like May Garden sort of, 大酒樓 pricing standard, not like ordinary ppl can patronize frequently one or at least not that affordable to da gong zai like us one." This is what used to refrain me from entering this restaurant. *paisey*

I stepped into it on Wednesday. Oops. And guess what?! I was happily-willingly- 'chopped'.

Seasoned carrots (酸菜) RM2.00 . I thought this type of dish is F.O.C?! Oh now I see that it's not apparently!

Amaranth braised with double mushrooms (苋菜炒雙菇) RM20.00 [My rating 9.5/10]

FABULOUS! Normally people go for Shiong Tong (上湯)style but I opted for "braised with double mushrooms" instead (since the menu there listed a few cooking choices). Mind you, this is a very good choice oh! A hem! Price wise, also increase a lot more RM lah. :)

The amaranth leaves were fresh and I didn't actually believe that the combination of the double mushrooms with this vege could be this great until I had it. I was impressed to see the mushrooms cuttings too. Being cut across the stem part (which is usually hard) and yet all tasted slippery soft.

Fried Pork Ribs with Pepper Salt (椒鹽排骨) RM16.00 [My rating 3/10]

This is a wrong choice. The fried pork ribs were simply too DRY to swallow and tasted rather bland. Perhaps we should go for other cooking styles and definitely not this pepper salt style!

Herbal Chicken Soup (烏雞湯)[My rating : 8/10]

We ordered soup of the day. They serve you in individual bowl. This is for one person serving, each bowl like this is RM12.00。*eyebrow raised* At one time I thought I was transported back to Jade Blossom Imperial 宮廷 dishes. :)

Fish Maw (花膠) ...........See? got far kaw!!! A few pieces loh. I like the soup for having that slightly 'bitter' taste (contributed by herbs) and not just plain pinch of salt to monopolize the taste.

砂煲者雞 (Braised chicken in Claypot) RM15.00 [My rating 7.5/10]

This is another surprisingly good dish. The chicken was tenderly cooked. The size is very easy to feed into the mouth. I thought I was eating paddy chicken (alright, I know this is a bit exaggerated lah)! No wonder the name is called "Chyue Chyue" lah.

Complimentary Fruit (F.O.C)

10% service charge applies.

Tea Break @ Summer Garden

This is a very cosy and cooling place to have business talk, discussion or chit-chatting. I love the seats hidden inside there as that is always the coolest place.

Sitting near the bistro entrance also not bad oh! The air-cond plus fan kept on blowing on you, SONG ah!

Ormanthus Tea (RM4.90)

Carrot Cake and Pineapple Juice. (Price - oops!)
If you were to cut a cross-section view, then you'll see the carrot strips sticking out from here and there. *pretty alien looking but cute?! *

Penang Floggers 4th Gathering @ Vintage Bulgaria (Deco Part)

You may go here to see the food that was specially arranged for our gathering.

The first 'wow.....' comes when you LOOK INSIDE by standing at the entrance.

At the entrance, you can see this setting at the basement. Table setting for two to four pax mainly.

The staircase right after the entrance.

Climbing up the staircase will lead you to this middle floor .

The bar corner.

I wish to have wine bottles arrayed like this as part of the interior decoration at my future home too! :)

Table setting at middle floor.

The back portion of the restaurant also has staircase leading down to basement.

Looking down from the staircase - on the back portion of basement. Table setting for group dining.

Our gathering was held at the top floor.

Very home-feel corridor.

Ladies toilet.

The wooden door of the toilet. Look at the latch!

Penang Floggers 4th Gathering @ Vintage Bulgaria (Food Part)

Last Saturday night I had a wonderful time @ Vintage Bulgaria celebrating our Penang Floggers 4th Gathering.

I was really impressed with most of the dishes that they offered on that night. It totally washed away the negative impression which I had initially back in last year.

Our menu of that night (click to enlarge).

Mushroom Soup, served with 'Vintage' garlic bread. [My rating : 8/10] .

This soup is pretty same like the JL Gourmet Cafe one which have mushrooms blended as ingredients. I like the way they served the cheese-baked garlic bread which is soft and only slightly crispy on the outside.

Seafood Soup [My rating : 9/10]

This soup may look pretty plain externally but I personally prefer this seafood soup to the mushroom soup above. It has a stronger aromatic taste with crabststick, tuna and etc all blended in.

Our table of six ordered all the main course dishes given in the menu. Therefore each of us got the chance to taste all different dishes ! Blissful leh?! :)

Out of all the FIVE maincourse dishes that we had, I ranked it according to my preference as below.

TOP 1 : Bulgarian Pork Djolan (Traditional roasted pork knuckle) [My rating : 9.5/10]

I am not a person who likes oily food BUT I ranked this as NUMBER ONE. Could you believe it?! Hehe! It must have got the super sexy 'inner beauty' that attracted me uh?!

The pork is roasted in such a way that exhibits internally tenderly soft texture and yet remains its juiciness. The external one is the most irresistably killing one - crispy skin overlying the fat....MOU TAK TENG AH! I like eating it in original taste without any sauce-dippings.

Using your knife cutting a cross section directly from the crispy skin-> fatty layer -> juicy meat -> WORRY about CHOLESTEROL some other days lah! :p

Top 2 : Baked Cod Fish Fillet (finished with creamy mushroom sauce). [My rating : 8.5/10]

A teeth-bouncing slice of cod fish fillet cut in thick size. This is a lot more refreshing than any other ordinary pan-fried fish fillets. The fillet texture is actually smooth like silk but it could be easily served as under-cooked if it's not properly taken care of though!

Top 3 : Chicken Stroganov (Boneless chicken drumstick cut into strips, cooked with mushroom, wine, cream, herbs & spices). [My rating : 8/10]

I didn't expect their chicken dish to be this great. Using boneless chicken drumstick and serving them in strips' form is definitely a greater choice than ordinary breast meat.

Plovdiv Ribs (Tasty pork ribs grilled till tender). [My rating : 6.5/10]

For me, it tasted too sweet and some said it's sour (?!). Eating the pork ribs alone without any other 'sub-items' to wash away the sweetness or sourness is definitely not favourable by me. This was the last dish served for our table thus I actually nearly IGNORED this dish as I was already too full by then. Perhaps the pork ribs were not that oily that's why it didn't get my vote heh?! :)

Bulgarian Platter. [My rating : 5/10]

It consists of mixed grill trio of kebapche, kyofte, karnatche (own traditional recipe of in-house homemade Bulgarian sauges) and succulent pork fillet.

Same like the pork ribs above, I did not like to eat this alone as it's TOO MEATY, without fats.

Desserts :

Chocolate Soup with Vanilla Ice Cream . [ My rating : 8/10]

Chocolate soup - I like the way they named this dish and served in a big soup bowl. At first I thought it must be very sweety richy chocolat-y but HEY, no leh....ngam my taste! Just scooping it up like soup and added with ice cream is definitely a bonus PLUS.

Chocolate Creme Brulee. [My rating : 8/10]

The chocolate creme brulee is also not that sweety richy chocolat-y like I expected. I like to eat the creme together with the carmelized sugar on top as shown below - a perfect size to melt in your mouth! [Thanks to Mary for featuring the how-to]

Beverages : Cordial Drinks, Coffee / Tea.

Next up will be on the interior decoration of Vintage Bulgaria. I found myself impressed more this round with its complete furnished top floor where we had our gathering that night.

See Kong Ooi (西公園) .... Cheap and GOOD ah!

See Kong Ooi (西公園) @ Transfer Road

Once in a while I will still miss the food at See Kong Ooi.

I love the presentation of this dish, very colourful. This dish with fragance is minced meat with salted fish and tasted a bit spicy.

Curry Fish Head. The gravy is a bit watery and sourish in taste. Appetizing enough to be served alone with rice.

Kiam Chai Tau Hu Thng. Another sourish soup. OMG! I must have gone crazy to have ordered all sourish dishes. :p

The longan drink is served like this. Zhuk Zhae is served in glass.

Total only costs RM31. Cheap cheap cheap ah!

Taipei Food Avenue

Taipei Food Avenue @ Prima Tanjung

It's been ages since I last stepped into Taipei Food Avenue. From this visit, I am relieved to find out that it still remains the quality like last time!

I used to order set but this time we wanted to taste more by ordering single item.

Pearl Milk Tea (RM3.50 each) . I like the pearls here as they do not have the 'hard' core within.

All the food below are in the price range of RM7-RM10. Service charge of 5% applies.

鍋貼 Fried Dumpling. Not that oily as I thought, suit my taste!

八寶飯 (Pat Pou Fan) . When it's served, I was kinda suspicious "er....like that one ah?! Taste ei khi beh khi ah?"

After eating then only I realized this dish was in fact better than normal fried rice. Every spoonful seems to be so healthy!

牛肉麵 (Beef Noodle). Whenever I ordered this dish, I would pay utmost attention to its beef slices. This time, the beef was cooked till tender just like day one when I visited here. They did maintain their quality!

炸酥雞排 (Fried chicken). This one tasted original without lemon and etc like what we usually got at night market.

And..of course, how could I have missed out the chance to get my beloved Green Tea Cake from Ritz leh? I grabbed one before going back home! Yeah.....my birthday celebration drags for the whole month one.....:)

Green Tea Cake RM30 @ 0.5 kg

I grabbed one box of macarons too, 6pcs selling at RM8.80. According to my 'experience', I found that after taking out from the fridge, the Ritz one was more 'kosong', not that 'chewy' (stick to your teeth) and more 'icing' feel as compared to the macarons from BBO one.

Soup of the day with soft bun and butter.

I like its concept of add on @ RM4.90 to get a complete 4-course meal. Flexible for consumers. The food is all at affordable price. Serving size wise, moderate. Food quality wise, mai hiam beh pai with the given price range.

si Tigun Cafe @ Nagore Road

Last Sunday I finally made it to si Tigun Coffee House, a so called "Bicycle Pit-Stop Cafe"after a few recommendations by colleagues and also Buzzingbee .

Skylight. Sunlight. You can have your drinks or meal at the table just beside here.

Danish Roll (RM 3.80). Jasmine Tea (RM4.20). I did not like its danish roll, it's kinda hard.

Espresso Double (RM4.80) . Thick and rich. Coffee lovers will like this.

Croissant with Egg, Butter and Jam (RM 5.80). It's my brunch. They still serve it although it's over 11.00a.m (breakfast serving end time). *Phew*

Croissant with Bacon + Egg, Butter and Jam (RM 7.80)

The croissant (牛角麵包) . Super soft. I like it!

Aozora Japanese Restaurant - Mad but entertained!

Aozora Japanese @ Bellisa Row, Pulau Tikus.

Story telling time AGAIN!!!!! Why my luck is bad whenever a birthday session is on uh?!

The chinese name of the restaurant is 青空高級日本餐廳 (so called "Aozora High Class Japanese Restaurant"), therefore I expected TOP CLASS service and food quality from them.

It's raining heavily and the restaurant was 3/4 full house.

Hokkigai Sashimi RM38.

They were fresh but six thin small pieces cost this much ?! *sigh* Adui, I couldn't help benchmarking this with Aji Noren one (OK lah, you wanna say "different class mah", right?!).

Frankly, they were really fresh!

The menu shows BENTO dishes like this. No side dishes listed at any areas within the page. Therefore I did not know whether if the bento served here is full set or three quarter set?

Alright, never mind.....I can ask mah," This bento got come with rice one ah?"
He said,"Yes, come with one rice one."

There was a table of four beside us.
The papa ordered soba set. He waved at the waiter," How come when I cracked open the egg and stirred into the soup, there are these little dark things inside one? like stones one leh! See? Can you please replace the egg and soup ?"
The waiter said,"OK."

While waiting for replacement, the mama wanted to order sake.
Papa waived at the waiter for sake menu.
The mama asked, "What's the difference between Qian Shui (千歲) and Wan Shui(萬歲)?"
The waiter brought a bottle of sake and explained, " Blah...blah..blah........."
It seemed like the explanation was not convincing enough that the papa started to 'signal' her wife by raising the eyebrows.
The wife quickly said, "OK lah, ok lah...we take this one!" before her hubby trying to complain again.

Tempura Bento (RM42) .

When our bento sets were served, coming along were one miso soup and one plate of fruit. NO OTHER THINGS ELSE. My rice leh?!

Unagi Bento RM42
The unagi served in this bento set was S-size one. It got M-size deep fried soft shell crab though!

The sashimi was fresh and served in THICK slices. About 1.2cm to 1.5cm thick leh! I was lucky to get one super long and thick one too! See below?

The mayo salmon sushi was another impressive one
! See to believe it! Four pieces somemore!

Tempura was kinda thick-flour fried though. "Yee.....how come no sauce one?! "

I waived at a female waitress, "Er.....my this tempura set comes with sauce or not for the tempura?"
She paused for a while then answered," NO...this tempura set doesn't come with tempura sauce." She didn't even bother to ask her supervisor! No no no no.....
"Oh ok........then my rice?"
She said,"OK, I go and ask the kitchen." off she went but without follow ups after that.

At the same time, my neighbour papa also got impatient already, dark-faced and started grumbling as his egg+sauce were still out of sight even after he reminded for one more time!

I waived at the male waiter who took my order just now,"Doesn't this tempura come with sauce?..and my rice leh?! "
He realized and said,"Yes, it does and the rice too......OK, pls wait."
The papa caught the chance and asked, "Where is mine? (pointing to his soba set) My chopstick you also take away already! Can you please return my chopsticks at least?"
The daughter said," Papa, why you always complain one?"
Papa said," When we see something wrong, we must escalate! E-s-c-a-l-a-t-e! "
*This sound like someone working in factory right?! :P*

Finally, my tempura sauce and rice were served after so many rounds of Q&A.
Then we realized,"Yee..........should have chawan mushi hor? Let's ask and see!"
We waived at one uncle waiter, he said,"Yes, got. I go and check it out."

At the same time, there were one 'couple' sitting 45 degree opposite me. The guy is ~40 yrs old with neck tie and the cute girl is may be 20+, wearing her furry jacket exactly ala-Jap fashion. The first impression coming into my mind was, "You know...." *matchmaking or....*

Since we waited and paused frequently, I managed to read the girl's face expression every now and then. The guy kept on talking and the girl kept putting up a smiley face and cracking a sentence or two in between. Their dishes were not served after long idle in between. At first the girl still can smile listening to the guy, later on her smiles also became dry. I believe she got no strength to 'entertain' him anymore. She kept on looking helplessly at the kitchen, perhaps hoping to see if her last dish was gonna come soon. At last she also beh tahan and waived at the waiter to chase for their orders. I pity her lah.

When I finished up my fruit - the last item on the table, my chawan mushi was still TAKDA after a few times of reminders given to waiter 1 and waiter 2, who didn't follow up apparently. At last, the uncle waiter who seemed to be more 'pro' observed the missing of chawan mushi STILL. It's already near to 9.45pm already oh! He went quickly back to kitchen, then came and informed us,"Your chawan mushi gonna come in 5 mins time". Huh?! What did the previous two fellows doing uh?

At last, chawan mushi was served. How come this right hand side one, the cover did not match with the cup one?! It's smaller size than the cup in fact. Simply grab one to put on top one is it?! :)

So....this chawan mushi ended up becoming my DESSERT loh! Fresh and hot from kitchen...but mind you, if given second chance, I do not wish to have this as my 'dessert' loh. I want it to be part of my bento meal ok?!

Right at this moment, another middle-aged couple was there impatiently waiving at waiter.
The waiter came out from the kitchen and quickly told them," It's done halfway!"
The lady beh tahan and replied loud enough for the surrounding tables to hear,"Har??? halfway? Not coming soon ah?"
She then smiled at me. I 'smiled' back indicating I knew how she felt.

In general, the food quality is not bad but the staffs are pretty new, need more time to familiarize to match with its "HIGH CLASS" title. I was rather 'mad' with their service quality but highly entertained by my neighbours!!! :)

When paying the bill, see the bill got NO CHARGE for green tea! Syiok sikit!

Service charge 10%

Da Ban Restaurant (大班中國風味館) II

Da Ban Restaurant (大班中國風味館)@ Jalan Zainal Abidin (off Macalister Rd, the road beside UMNO building)

Last Saturday I re-visited this Da Ban after reading the article from local newspaper of late. Its name has been changed from 大班火鍋 Da Ban Steamboat Restaurant to 大班中國風味館.

One unpleasant thing is the serving portion here is standard (BIG), no matter you come in two or six persons loh :( . See the name is called DA BAN (大班) mah, so got to have such hei pai (氣派)lah!

It's advisable to come in 4 pax and above, or else you got to cari lubang to swallow all in! Another thing is they often use gingers in their dishes, therefore if you are one who doesn't like ginger then perhaps it's OH-NO for you!

Homemade Dumpling (北方水餃) . Pure minced pork dumpling.
I like its thin skin. Other than that, eating the minced pork stuffed alone was rather plain loh.

Chinese Herbal Pig Liver Soup (枸杞豬肝湯). The soup is OK with kei chee, ginger shreds and pig liver. The pig liver is fresh, cooked just right, not like those too hard due to over-cooked one nor too soft or lembik until can see the blood one.

Fried Pork Rib with Pineapples (鳳梨排骨). This is pretty different from normal good ones (for example like 晋美茶行(馆) (Chin Bee) one). This Da Ban version tasted really FRIED with skinny flesh externally. You may not like it oh!

Braised Homestyle Tofu (家常豆腐). The tofu was braised therefore having rough skin externally. Lack of spice or flavour if to go with rice.

Snow Jelly (雪蛤(每盅))RM8.00 . Lift the cover and found only got HALF pot nia! Can't see much snow jelly loh! CKA!

I was not sure if we've ordered wrong dishes or what?! Perhaps I should FOLLOW guideline to order their 'RECOMMENDED' dishes only leh! Price wise, I would say in overall a bit over-priced lah.

中國民間瓦缸煨湯餐館 Chinese Traditional Herbal Soup (Part III)

中國民間瓦缸煨湯餐館 - Chinese Traditional Herbal Soup @ Fairwood Cafe, Sungai Ara

I guess when I have finished trying out all the soup here one fine day, I'll be qualified to come out with one SPECIAL edition (專輯) huh? No?! :p

This time I tried out the more common ones that we used to cook at home too.

Pork Rib Soup with Old Cucumber & Barley (老黃瓜薏實排骨湯) RM16. This one alone is good enough to serve with your rice as it got lao timun and meat, need not order additional side dishes loh.

黑豆花生豬腳湯 (Pig Leg Soup with Black Beans & Ground Nuts) RM16.
This one is great for those who like to eat pig legs! No stingy on the ingredients for sure.

人參花旗參雞湯 American Ginseng Chicken Soup - So far this is still the most 'umph' (best) from all that I've tried before.

百合清潤排骨湯 Pork Rib Soup with Huai Sum, Bai He and Yu Zhu .

One pleasant thing which I found out from my recent visits is that they have actually improved their 'economic dishes' - look more 'lalu' now.

They have also some side dishes like this one - pork rib with yam, which actually tasted good surprisingly! The yam is very soft oh!

Canton Gourmet (唐人街咖啡廳)

Canton Gourmet 唐人街咖啡廳 @ Krystal Point

Don't you ever use either Canton-i or Dragon-i standard here. This one has nothing to do with either of them and is far affordable in terms of price. You got to be ready giving 'discounts' on your expectation if you plan to head over for this restaurant though.

Vegetable Spring Rolls 春卷 5pcs (RM5.90) . This one is far better than the one I had at Coffee Island before. One piece was 'stolen' fast enough before I managed to shoot. :)

Pork Ribs Rice (秘製排鼓王飯) RM6.90 . This is a pretty standard type of lunch set. the rice/porridge is in the range of RM5.90 - RM8.90.

Mushroom Shanghai Noodles Soup (鮮菇上海面) RM5.90 . I actually did not expect to be served with such button mushrooms from cans as its main source of mushrooms. Luckily the noodles were not too bad. The addition of BROCCOLI reminded me of my days back in US though! Argh!

Prawn Dumpling Soup (蝦皇水餃湯) RM8.90. I did not develop any allergies from eating the prawns, thus they are considered 'not poisonous' to me -pass my basic requirement. :)

Shark Fin Soup (魚翅湯) RM8.90. I did not fancy its shark fin soup as it tasted pretty same like Dragon Y one.

Menu is pretty simple in one card form.

In general, mai hiam beh pai loh. Hopefully it gonna sustain.

5% service charge applies.
