No Eye Deer Restaurant (Invited Review)

No Eye Deer Restaurant @ Prima Tanjung

I was impressed since my first visit to NO EYE DEER a few years ago. I still remember how my Spaghetti Marinara tasted like at here.

Top left where you can see watermelon cubes : Wacky Wizard (RM8.80) Delicious & wacky smoothie of mango yoghurt & pineapple. I dislike the taste of this smoothie as it's sourish + sweet at the same time. I believe it's very much dependent upon the fruit source of that day.

Top right where you can see the one with green apple cubes : Drama Queen (RM8.80) Glamarous smoothie of pink guava & pineapple with sour plum. Sourish taste all along.

Bottom : Chunky Monkey (RM8.80) : A rich and delicious banana smoothie with ice cream & chunky peanuts. Out of the three smoothies, I favoured this Chunky Monkey the most! I could taste a good combination of banana + peanuts blended with frangance.

Wacky Wizard & Pink guava juice (RM4.20) . There are also Lassi available which are priced at RM4.80 each.

Laotian Laksa (Beef or Chicken) RM12.80 [My rating : 9/10]
NoEyeDeer famous signature dish of rice noodle in a spicy & piquant soup with tender beef or chicken, bean sprouts and basil. This is my favourite dish of that night! I seriously fell in love with this dish. I particularly liked the beef version. The beef was tenderly-cooked. Slurping the soup, topped with rice noodle plus that aromatic basil all in one scoop was simply awesome! I couldn't stop but scooping more and more for that appetizing soup !

Chicken Parmigiana (RM18.80) [My rating : 6/10]
Italian styled chicken fillet with stewed tomato and Mozarella cheese. Served with mash potato and salad. This is best eaten when it's served hot. The chicken was a bit dried, not that up to my expectation; perhaps due to our long photoshooting time. I was impressed last time when we had it here .

Today Special : Meaty Beef Pie (RM16.80) [My rating : 5/10]
Served with golden french fries & fresh crisp cos lettuce. The beef stuffed inside was a lil bit too sweet to my liking though. I prefer to have some other side dishes to balance up my tastebuds after each sweet bite of that beef.

Pan grilled Sea Bass with white sauce (RM19.80) [ My rating : 7/10]

Pan-grilled white fish fillet with a tangy white sauce and served with fresh crisp salad & mashed potato. I dislike thick creamy sauce but this white sauce version seemed to be OK for me. However, I still prefer their Chilli Lime Sea Bass more (click here ) as it's more refreshing and appetizing, just like the Laotian Laksa.

Chicken Cheddar Sausage (RM15.80) [My rating : 8/10]

Smoked chicken sausages served with mashed potato and salad. I liked this one too! Their sausages have never failed to please me, frankly. It's a safe-to-order dish as it still tasted good even after long exposure time! (photoshooting lah, what else uh?! :p)

Not too sourish, dipped with the special sauce made me a happy lady!

Traditional Grilled Steak (RM29.80) [My rating : 8/10]

Char-grilled tender beef steak with traditional rich brown gravy and served with homemade mashed potato, broccoli & carrots. The look from my photo here may be ugly but please dear, this is a dish which you could never judge by its look. It was juicy and tender, I would say it matched well with the brown gravy.

Caveman Platter (for 3-5 pax) RM68.00 [ My rating : 6/10]

Mixed platter of char-grilled lamb, chicken kebabs, chicken sausages, chicken wings & pepper lamb sausages. Wow! This came as our very last dish as a CARNIVOROUS feast! :) OH NO, soooo BIG SERVING ah? I had difficulty capturing the best shot for this dish as it's ALL black, gosh! :p

The grilled lamb was OK in overall although some parts were over-grilled. I found that the chicken wings were a lil' bit too dry. The sausages were like what I expected, a 'safe' item to consume despite some charred area. The chicken kebab was surprisingly succulent and I like it when it's balanced up with some green sweet pepper/ capsicum annum.

Coffee Jelly (RM5.80) [ My rating : 7/10]
'Frantastically refreshing" Japanese Jelly dessert served with silky fresh cream and syrup (voted Best Jelly in Malaysia by readers of 'The Star' Newspaper 23rd March 2008)

I was a bit doubtful "The best jelly in Malaysia huh?" at my first scoop. But then after having more scoops I started to like it! It's a creative recipe indeed to come out with such coffee-taste jelly and not the usual pudding that we used to eat. It's a healthy LIGHT dessert.

Upside Down Ice Cream (RM4.80) [ My rating : 6/10]
Double scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzled with melted chocolate and roasted nuts served with a wafer cone in an ingenuous way.

This is the first invited review that I have ever had whereby we were given freedom to choose whatever dishes we want from the menu. I 'salute' to the boss, Mr Ken Low for his generosity, courage and also confidence. Also thanks Steven for the organization.

Nasi Ayam Periuk Besar - story time again !

Nasi Ayam Periuk Besar @ Monrods Kitchen, D' Piazza Mall

I believe this is another newly opened restaurant that aimed at attracting FTZ workers as customer base during lunch hour but then NOT READY to serve the crowd.

Initially I thought 'Nasi Ayam Periuk Besar' is something like chu char that we gonna order curry chicken in big pot (sort of) until.......................

The story began like this....

We went in a group of 10 persons and we were ushered to the 1st floor since downstair was fully occupied already.

1) We waited nearly 45mins to get our first dish of nasi ayam served. Each time the waiter can only take two plates of nasi ayam on his tray and use that spiral staircase climbing up to 1st floor. When the first 4 of us had finished up their nasi ayam, the rest 6 of us were still waiting for our nasi ayam. [Why not they invest on a lift-type kinda system to tranport their dishes up? even a manual pulling-rope type is GOOD enough to serve the purpose! ]

2) Iced milk tea is priced at RM1.80 but the glass size is like our old time hawker's soya milk that type of small glass. Our first glass of drink was served after waiting for ~20 mins, somemore it's a very thin milk tea. [Why not they use a larger size glass? if smaller glass pls bancuh thicker lah.]

3) Our takeaway order came before our dine-in orders. The take-away nasi ayam which was nicely packed was sitting on our table for ~ 15 mins before our 1st dish of nasi ayam came. [This is simply ridiculous! Don't know who to blame to?!]

4) In between the 4th dish and the 10th dish of nasi ayam served on our table, we detected the waiters were serving three dishes of nasi ayam to the next table who came after us and ordered after us. There is an online system for the waiters to key in orders but then the management couldn't control on the accurate serving sequence. They already kelam- kabut with so many customers rushed in during Friday lunch hour. [They must allocate a supervisor on upper floor too!]

5) We ordered 9x 'madu' and 1x 'panggang' one, it ended up all were served 'madu' one. We simply couldn't afford to return you the 'madu' to exchange for 'panggang' one anymore as we've spent nearly 1 hour of sitting-and-waiting in here already! [Again, the management needs to control and ensure accuracy and speed in serving.]

LUCKILY the waiters although inexperienced, polite still.

Let you see the Milk Tea @ RM1.80+ .

Nice packaging uh?! Take away packaging was charged @ RM1.00+ each. :)

Nasi Ayam Madu (RM5.50+)

Sauce on the chicken was really not bad though! The soup and the chilli sauce were good too.

The chicken breast sooooooooooooooo like that, HARD and DRY! 'siap-siap' one. Perhaps next time we gotto specify 'boey bak' portion uh?! but then I wonder if such request will be entertained?!

Reasonably priced. 5% service charge applies.

老房子 Old House Cafe Vegetarian Set

老房子 Old House Cafe @ Kimberley Street

My dining experience last Thursday at the Old House Cafe was a rather pleasant one. The service was pretty OK. I didn't face any problems e.g. confronting waiters who would never serve you the cili padi or drinks even after repeated reminders being made (that's what my colleagues encountered on last Sunday).

I was actually having lower expectation for cafe kinda food but the dishes that we ordered turned out to be rather OK despite the higher price range.

Take note on the table. Focus on the leg space area under the table. It gonna be not so convenient or comfortable for people sitting at sideway. Where you gonna stretch your legs uh?

Old House Braised Meat with Rice 滷肉飯 (RM7.50 nett).

Serving is big. This is good for those who are carnivorous! :)

Old House Vegetarian Set 素食套餐 (RM12.00 nett)

It comes with vegetarian duck, mushroom, vegetarian lor bak, vegetarian curry chicken and simmered cabbage. I was satisfied with each type of ingredients, not too bad lah!

Before I started eating, I thought,"Aiyoh, enough or not har? must add rice or not leh later?" but at the end, I was totally FULL.

Pink Guava 番石榴 (RM2.50 nett) & Lor Han Guo 羅漢果 (RM1.50 nett) .

Drinks were reasonably priced compared to the ala carte dishes. I particularly like this thick glass which has handle at the side. :)

Some shots of the menu.

George Town White Coffee Beh Khi leh!

George Town White Coffee @ Komtar

No doubt the ambience is very comfy and cozy but....

I did not care about how bad the reviews were on the food for the past few months but from the verdict of this dining experience on one of the weekdays (last week), it's simply not worth my second visit unless going for a drink.

Hainanese Fried Mee (RM8.90+) - A serving size same like hawker stall, with 2x prawns, 2x to 3x fish cakes and a few vege slices, tasted too sweet for me. Why should we spend here then?

Chicken Porridge (RM7.90+) - It's not comparable at all to the porridge offered at Mr Pot @ RM6.60 nett nor Roti Bakar Kopitiam fish porridge @ 6.20 nett one. Somemore this price of RM7.90 is for chicken, not fish. The porridge is teo chew 'rice' porridge type with peanuts and ikan bilis. The ikan bilis is not crispy enough and seemed to be starchy after continuous chewing.

Apollo Float (RM4.80 +) - ice cream plus roti?! Ice cream is ice cream, roti is roti. What's that?! *OMG!*

@ The Sun : Set Lunch Part

Spring Chamber Restaurant @ The Sun, Macalister Road.

The Sun 4-course-set lunch is priced at RM28 NETT.

It's SUNDAY and yet set lunch is available! Main course alone costs you RM18.

Complimentary drink. Small glass of mango sparkling. Super good ah!

Appetizer : French bean tuna salad with potato. For me, I think I've made a right choice by choosing this compared to the below onion soup. :) I particularly like the way they blended the tuna so well together with the salad. It won't be too greenish raw nor merely mayo-creamy.

Appetizer : Homemade French Onion Soup. The soup is very watery plain. Not impressed.

Grilled chicken mushroom sauce served with potato wedges and saute vegetables. We personally favour this chicken set more if compared to the lamb set below. The mushroom taste in the sauce is super rich!

Grilled lamb loin mustard sauce served with mashed potato and saute vegetables. Three pieces of grilled lambs like this definitely is considered a reasonable to big serving! I personally like its medium cooked texture but yet I got to let go some chewy parts.

Pan Fried Salmon Paprika cream sauce- the third choice available in the menu. No idea how it gonna taste like. I gotto wait for you to review then.

Dessert wise, I think it's not comparable to The Opera one. They are something that neither will we make a "O'-shaped lips nor "WOW!" at it when it's serve in front of you.

See it to believe it dear!

Mango cake with coulis and fresh fruits.
White chocolate tart with fruits.

Ice Lemon tea and Peach tea. Normal only.

I couldn't help but comparing this The Sun set lunch to the Opera Set Lunch.

The Opera :

Price @ RM18 + = RM19.80 nett. (WIN!)
Not available on Sunday.
No before-meal complimentary sparkling drink.
No choice on appetizer and dessert. Fixed. Two choices on main course.
Iced lemon tea is very impressive! (WIN!)
Main course serving size is smaller.
Main course is good, no matter which you choose! (WIN!)
Dessert is very outstanding! (WIN!)

@ The Sun :

Price @ RM28 nett.
Available on Sunday. (WIN!)
Serve very good before-meal complimentary sparkling drink (WIN!)
Got choices on appetizer and dessert. Three choices on main course (WIN!)
Iced lemon tea is normal.
Main course serving size is bigger (WIN!)
Main course is less impressive!
Dessert is less attractive.

OK, judge yourself! :)

The Sun : Deco Part

The Sun @ Macalister Road

It's inside the compound of The Sun Yat Sen Center.

Park your car inside and get your ticket 'chop'-ed to waive parking fees.

Beautiful table setting.

The spoons, knives and forks are all HEAVY one oh ! Mai siao siao! :)

I found that any interior walls painted with this type of green+dark choco colour will make the whole interior deco looks very modern, classic and yet CHIO!

The dining area can accomodate about 10 tables in which three of them are for big groups (6-8pax).

Ladies, don't you think this is lovely? Creative antique uh?!

Gentlemen - you need not envy, you can find similarity in yours too. :p

Ah Joo Durian @ Sungai Batu

It’s durian season again from May till August. Thanks to Steven for the ride to this wonderful durian trip!

Over here at Ah Joo’s durian stall, the durians and some other local fruits are supplied from Gertak Sanggul whereas the rambutans are from Balik Pulau.

He has been operating for ~17 yrs on durian business. You can easily detect his stall which has no fancy NUMBER nor funny NICK, just right after the mosque at Sungai Batu.

If you are coming from airport -> Teluk Kumbar direction, right after this mosque on your left, take note on the Forever Star electrical and plumber trading house. Ah Joo's stall is right beside it.

The taukeh aka Ah Joo.

Ang Hae / Udang Merah / Otak Udang 红虾 (RM10-30) (明星風範! 一站出來, 的確艷光四色! 兼具實力+偶像的魅力,讓人讚嘆不已!) (She is a born artist, standing amidst the other candidates she outshines the rest, equipped with both strength & idol features, very impressive!)

I could understand how it can be related to "Ang Hae" as it's orange in colour. Smooth and fine, sweetness could be said ~ 90% and exhibit only a slight bitter taste. The flesh is thick as it consists of small seed.

This one that we ate is RM16.

Hor Lor 葫芦 (below RM15) (有波有蘿,又真的難怪您會對她起痰的。本姑娘可不是傻甜姐兒唷,好歹也是出身名門家族,有學問("苦"學)又有超佳的身材與外貌。) (She got nice figure, no wonder it's soooo irresistable to all of you. "I" am no dumb but inherited prestigious family background and highly 'educated', somemore with nice body shape! )

Fine and gummy. It tasted sweet in the beginning (at the outer part) and getting more and more bitter when you reach towards the seed.

Kim Poh ( below RM15, less than Hor Lor) ( 二奶的風範。為何?因她軟綿綿的,嬌柔百態,引您入局,一旦上釣,呵呵,您就苦了!) She is sort of a concubine. Why? She is sentimental and tender, treat you mild and please you well. Once you are hooked, hoho! You'll suffer!)

Fine and creamy. Its texture is like ice cream when you first pull it up but it tasted rather bitter!

Ooi Kiau Ong / Kunyit Kuning 黄姜 (below RM10)(像大老婆, 照顧您的感受兼具實在的內涵,
與您共患難! ) Like the official wife, always care about your feeling and somemore she's equipped with beauty plus connotation, faithful to be together!)
Fade yellowish flesh with bitter and creamy taste.

Chae Pui 青皮(RM8 -RM20) ( 吃得苦中苦,方為人上人。先苦後甜非這款莫屬。當然,能吃得上這款的,也就證明您起碼還不賴的,是個重感情的傢伙!) (If you can endure, you'll harvest later. "Bitter first, sweet later" must be her. If you can consume her, then you are undoubtedly a guy with sense and sensibility!)

Bitter. The outer skin alone is very sweet, inside is gradually getting bitter. The seed is very small! We were told that if the flesh inside appears as green-based, then it's normally bitter. Ah! No wonder lah!

This one that we ate is RM8.

(Taste like 'kampung' girl, with sweet dimples, but it is soooo sorry to be nicked so. Looking from this angle, the 'buttock' actually looks rather meaty as if it's stuffed though! What a funny boss uh?!)

Super sweet petite darling.

I was very happy whenever seeing small lovely pieces like this!

Other durian species available are Kor Teh, Kucing Tidur, Capri, Susu, D15, D2, COB, Ganja, Qi Xian Nyu and etc.

Other local fruits available are :
Cempedak (red meat) 1kg/RM3
Langsat 1kg/RM2
Rambutan 3kg/RM5, 1kg/RM2
Mangosteen 2kg/RM5, 1kg/RM3

Tel : Ah Joo 017-4222248. For delivery, call Kelly 012-4531812.
Another branch at Sg Nibong 4pm-10pm (nearby the kopitiam selling bak kut teh).
