Chok Dee Thai - Simply Delicate!

Chok Dee Thai @ Burmah Road

Before I finalized to go to this Thai restaurant, I always walked around the office and imitated Thai accent, "Maa Roy Thai...Aroi Thai...Chok Dee Thai..." and they would show the face of "????" or "what the heck?"! at me (this 'siao cha bor' ) as they had no idea at all what I was talking about. (The three names above are actually the names of Thai restaurants at town. I was indecisive which one to bring our US guest to).

On Thursday, we were caught in a downpour on the journey to Chok Dee Thai . Most of us were 80% drenched by the time we reached the entrance but our disgust were soon swept away by the charm and warmth of the taukeh soe and also the DELICATE dishes offered by Chok Dee Thai.

The 'taukeh soe' is a MUST to mention. :) I couldn't take my eyes away from her for the first 10 minutes after I entered the restaurant as I really thought her apperance is 80% resembles the 泰国著名法医普缇(Porntip Rojanasunan)). Don't you think so?! The hairstyle in particular!

The tables in the restaurant were soon 90% filled up within half an hour despite of the heavy rain.

Mr. A, B & C with beers and two ladies with lassi drink and longan drink.

Judging from the serving size at Chok Dee Thai, which is relatively smaller if compared to other Thai restaurants, you may interprete this as MORE expensive too. I got no objection on this. :)

My responsibility is to zha fit ordering all the recommended good dishes to make everyone eat happily. Therefore, trust me dear, I couldn't care less about the price at all! Wahahaaa!!!!

Green Curry Chicken. The green curry is not spicy (according to my level of acceptance) but it's impressive enough. Serving in a small clay bowl, one could easily taste the sense of delicacy in preparing this dish. The curry is cooked finely with tender chicken meat served in small pieces.

I was a bit reluctant when I was introduced Deep Fried Kailan as it always ended up to be TOO OILY from my past experiences at other places. I bet you I would have surely regretted if I didn't order this at that night. At Chok Dee Thai, this dish is far too good! The leaves are very crunchy with minimal oiliness.

Lemon Steamed Fish (clear soup). The soup is superb enhanced by lemon's sourness! We couldn't stop scooping for more and more! The fish is fresh and properly cleaned internally.

Since we have already ordered one fish dish with white/clear soup-based, therefore we were recommended to take Red Tomyam.

Seafood Tomyam (Red). Well! The flavour is better in terms of smoothness and milky fragance if compared to other tomyams. It uses fresh milk(!)

I chose MEDIUM for spicy level to suit all in general but the two males sighed! Upon seeing such situation, the taukeh soe offered this chilli for them to add into their tomyam soup to increase spiciness.
I personally felt that MEDIUM is actually too mild. If a person like me also can tolerate the MEDIUM level, then it's better for you to choose HIGH and above. :)

At this juncture, someone even commented so,"After eating here, I started realizing that the lunch we had at Golden T*iangle last week was really beh khi leh !"

Prawns with Curry Paste. Prawns are fresh with creamy curry paste.

Long Beans fried with Roasted Pork, Sambal. I actually tasted sweetness in this dish. Sambal?! mild though.

Otak-Otak (Seafood). I was a bit disappointed to find more cabbages than seafood in this dish. I wished that the texture of the whole otak-otak could be a little bit firmer.

Fried Kailan with Salted Fish. Pretty standard.

Stuffed Chicken Meat. Normally for this dish, I ate thick flour skin but at Chok Dee Thai, it's the opposite.

Thin flour with juicy chicken meat which is just right, not too dry.

Dessert.
Total bill is RM230+ including drinks and rice, for 5x persons.

I WILL BE BACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!

台灣風味 功夫麵 (Taiwan Kung Fu Noodles)

台灣風味 功夫麵 (Taiwan Kung Fu Noodles) @ Pantai Jerjak

I was told that the rest of the stalls at this kopitiam are beh khi, EXCEPT this Taiwan food stall. If you continue to read and find that I only talk about this stall and not the others, then it means TRUE?! :)

Clear illustration of the dishes available at this stall, which is located right at the entrance of the kopitiam.

During my first visit, the one that caught my attention immediately is the KUNG FU NOODLES !

The first time I ordered RM3.00, a small bowl one. The second time, I straightway asked the taukeh nio, "Can make one bowl big one boh?!" and I ordered BIG one, RM4.00. :)

The ingredients seem to be too simple for us to believe that it's HO CHIAK based on this appearance right?!

The chicken breast meat - Oh no, I believe normally when one looks at it, will surely think that it must be 'siap siap' one right?! Well, NOT AT ALL loh! It's been prepared till tender. A surprise to me indeed!

This chilli paste is unique, not too spicy though. It's a super star for this dish! Try it then you'll know why I said so.

I like its curly noodles!

Ah Keat doesn't like noodles. He ordered Kung Fu Rice (RM3.00) instead.
First time he ordered this.

Second time he still ordered this.

The day that we went for second time coincidentally is the day when the taukeh nio is going to launch the taiwan beef noodles, therefore she gave us a small bowl to sample!
The soup base is really 'umph'-ed with fragance but a little bit spicy, exactly like those we have back in Taiwan's beef noodle house. I particularly love its white radish! It's so well done and 'jip bee' !

How about the beef?! Look at this! Of course mou tak teng lah!

I asked the taukeh nio whether got non-spicy version. She said YES(!).

OK, I'll be back for its beef noodles soon!!!

All About Sugar & Gift 團圓甜品屋

All About Sugar & Gift @ Lorong Susu, Penang.

Last Saturday how come we ended up at FFF (which seemed like not a very good choice?! ha!) is because after looking at this Tang Yuan House's menu , I found that their set meal did not seem to be that appealing.

We went back again the next day for merely tang yuan instead.

Mixed Fruit Sago 雜果西米露(RM5.90) . This one NGAM me!!!! Lots of fruits on top of milky ice.

Lotus Seed Tau Sar Tang Yuan 龍鳳呈祥 (RM2.40)

Pink one is stuffed with lotus seed whereas green one is black sesame. Both tasted equally good! The external layer is topped with coconut shreds (salty) whereas the internal paste is sweet. It's served WARM! I think it's best eaten with each sharing half bite of the Tang Yuan! :)

This is the plain lemon drink, served FOC. This one really helps in neutralizing our taste buds.

Green Tea Tang Yuan 綠茶 (RM3.90) - 2x BIG green tea paste stuffed tang yuan + 10x plain small ones.
I strongly believe this is more worthy than that 香港汤圆 HK tang yuan @ New Lane now.

Additional Set Meal. I have no urge to try it out lah. I shall wait for you people to post ya. :)
Chee Cheung Fun (豬腸粉)+ tang yuan + plain lemon drink (RM3.90)
Chinese Wine Salted Chicken (酒釀鹽雞)+ rice + tang yuan + plain lemon drink (RM8.90)

Harvest In Cafe - Pepper Mint Lamb Chop RISKY!

Harvest In Cafe @ Irrawaddy Road

Again I chose to dine in this restaurant (near mah!) before attending the orchestra performace (Konsert Utama 2009) at Dewan Sri last Saturday.

All three of us chose the set. I wished the bread could be larger in size so that I won't waste the butter :)

Since I've been here before therefore I knew roughly how's the food standard is. Again, if coming with 'mai hiam beh pai' policy then it won't let you down too much.

Pepper Mint Lamb Chop (RM21.80) . SHE commented as stated below and we all LOL!

"How come the lamb seems to be OLDER than me ah?" :p

Spaghetti Carbonara (RM18.80) . Surprisingly the pasta is served al dente. It turned out the best dish of the night for our table.

Jumbo Sausage (RM14.80). Tasted exctly like my last visit

Dessert is the same, either jelly or cheesecake.

No government tax nor service charge.

FFF (First Famous Federal) 第一馳名聯邦燒臘專門店

FFF (First Famous Federal) 第一馳名聯邦燒臘專門店 @ Lorong Susu

I was impressed with this kopitiam's longan drink. Got longan, lychee and jelly.

I was disappointed over its kiam chai boay thng! ONLY tasted spicy! No sourness?!

I was impressed on the thoughtfulness of the lady. We ordered roasted pork which has yet to be ready but the other guy served the soup first. The fan was blowing to us directly one!) She later on realized and pointed our table "cheee chee tzuuuu tzuuuu" to another guy. This guy then collected back this bowl and served to us hot(!) one when our dishes were ready about 15mins later.

We ordered roasted duck and roasted pork. The name is FFF but I wonder is it really that FAMOUS?! I didn't find any 'surprise' in here.

Roasted Duck. Frankly I have difficulty looking for the meat on most of the slices. :)

Total RM16.00 (excluding drinks).

Ki Xiang : Klang Bak Kut Teh (巴生奇香肉骨茶)

Ki Xiang : Klang Bak Kut Teh @ Prai, nearby Megamall

Our last stop ended up at Ki Xiang. It can be considered as a 50% food review since it's basically ad-hoc.

Passing by the Megamall's front entrance, go further up a few hundred meters then turn right. You'll be seeing PC Depot on your left. Go straight till the end of the road and you'll see this BIG signboard "Ki Xiang" . The building is at your left in yellow+green colour.

Ingredients for Dry Bak Kut Teh (乾肉骨茶) : dried chillies, green chillies and dried cuttlefish and ladies fingers (my favourite)!

From Top to Bottom :
豬尾 vs 瘦肉.
大骨 vs 腳彎.
豬腳 vs 小骨.

Both of these pig stomach and intestines are VERY HO LIAO! They are so well done that you can CINCAI (simply) slice them off so easily by just a soft cut using your spoon! This proves that it's indeed very soft and I really couldn't get enough of this until I started becoming conscious again thinking of "cholesterol" !

豬肚

豬腸

The enoki mushrooms (RM4 per bowl) also were rather special too with addition of cooking wine taste!

Dry Bak Kut Teh (乾肉骨茶) which is full of WOK HEI! (oops, not wok hei, but claypot hei! ;p)

Soup Bak Kut Teh

The soup is very thick and I felt like drinking gravy at some moment. Therefore I do not dare to consume much.

This is the Headquater at Kulim. Branch available at BM Taman Jaya.

Small RM2.40.
Big RM 2.80.

I Love You Lemonade is pretty special in taste. The first sip tasted rather weird, but continuous drinking brought me surprise. It's either you-like-it or you-hate-it.

Avoid ordering Raspberry Truffle Italian Soda if you are not daring enough to take risk. :)

Back = Green Tea Honey Latte (No. 172) RM6.50 . I was disappointed as I couldn't taste the green tea flavour, perhaps latte was over-powering?!

The espresso series below all tasted pretty bitter without addition of sugar.

Havana Holiday (No. 95) RM 7.00 . Espresso Mixed With Steamed Milk & Lime Vanilla, Peppermint Syrup.

After Dinner Mint Cappuccino (No. 80) RM 7.00 . Espresso With Steamed Milk & Cho, Crème De Monthe Syrup.

Noodle Station Kulim (Food Part)

Noodle Station @ Kulim Landmark Central, Kulim (Invited Review)

A bunch of us drove to Kulim last Saturday for a series of food hunting events.

The first Noodle Station outlet opened its first day of business in April 2005 in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. This Kulim branch was opened this year.

Noodle Station provides a very extensive menu. Their food category alone has a total of 74 items!

1. Springy Noodle Soup With Tom Yam Seafood (No. 32) RM 7.50

The tom yam soup is sweet-based but appetizing enough. No wonder this dish appears to be one of their popular dishes. I ranked it as one of my TOP 3 dishes!

2. Curry Springy Noodle With Prawn & Fish Ball (No. 25) RM 7.50
I rank this dish as one of my Top 3 too. If it could be less salty, then I could have afford to eat it more often!

That's how the springy noodles of Noodle Station look like. Unlike the normal yellow noodles we used to have, its texture is softer and curly (almost similar to our instant noodles). It's rather special to me!

3. Springy Noodle With BBQ Honey Whole Leg Chicken (No. 15) RM 8.00

The presentation of this dish is superb! The whole leg chicken is placed in the middle of the noodles. I prefer the gravy to be more generous so that the noodles can be dipped with garlic sauce too.

4. Springy Noodle With Fried Chicken Dumpling (No. 7) RM 6.50

It's a bit dry per my preference. I believe Noodle Station serves the above soup-based wantan noodles far better than their dry dishes.

Noodle Station's menu is really extensive! Other than the wantan noodles, Noodle Station also serves fried rice, fried rice noodles and fried kuey teow.

5. Fried Rice With Prawn (No. 53) RM6.00

This is a non-spicy fried rice. The taste could have been enhanced by a pinch of salt, perhaps. Not too oily, I appreciate its sense of health consciousness here though. :)

6. Tom Yam Fried Rice With Prawn (No. 54) RM6.50

Those who like to have their fried rice rich in tom yam paste should not be disappointed by this dish. This ranks as my TOP 3 too! It's indeed appetizing, rich in tom yam paste.

7. Ladna Kuey Teow (No. 45) RM6.50

Due to the plate is big, the 'hor fun' seems to be too little when you see from this top view uh?! The 'hor fun' is served in big chunks oh.

8. Fried Yellow Noodle Hokkien Style- Kicap Hitam (No. 49) RM6.50

This dish is almost equivalent to those which we could get outside. Does this prove again their BASAH series is more OK than the dry series, hmm?! :)

9. Spicy Fried Kuey Teow (No. 44) RM6.00

I believe one could easily list down a few of their favourite fried kuey teow hawker stalls are. Therefore no matter how good Noodle Station offers also it won't beat the hawker stalls one. :)

10 . Fried Springy Noodle With Prawn- No Spicy (No. 39) RM6.50

I personally think that it's a bit 'lembik' for this dish.

11. Fried Springy Noodle With Thai Style- Spicy (No. 40) RM6.50
Yes, this dish seems to be much better! Again, Thai series prove safe to order! :)

12. Fried Chicken Dumpling- 10PCS (No. 73) RM5.00

One can order their fried chicken dumplings under the SIDE ORDER menu. The skin is crispy but the filling is little. I am greedy. I wish that the filling could be more. :)

13. Honey BBQ Chicken Wing- 6PCS (No. 72) RM14.50

Perhaps due to the long exposure or waiting time in the kitchen, the chicken wings that I ate were not up to my expectation. They were a bit drier than usual.

14. Super Sandwich With Smoke Turkey (No. 67) RM7.50

I shortlisted this sandwich too. I like the way they serve the bread in thick cutting!

14. Chicken Chop With Brown Sauce (No. 57) RM10.90

The chicken chop tasted average as I do not fancy its brown sauce. I wish that it could be more unique.

Basically, Noodle Station provides a clean and cozy ambience for dining pleasure. However, I hope the franchisor can improve based on some of our minor feedbacks here and polish up their new menu soon! :) I wish that they can improve the foremost, their fried/ DRY dishes out of its extensive stretch of menu.

Thanks to Mr. Khoh for extending his invitation to us.

Doraemon Mooncake yucks!

Doraemon Fruity Wonderland by Bigsgood (谷城餅棧) .

BEFORE tasting :
The mooncakes look soooooo cute on the catalogue! All of us actually sighed "Aiks......" when came to know that it's only available at KL.

Finally, one of our colleagues shared these precious mooncakes that she handcarried from KL back to Penang.

We happily cut the mooncakes. These are Black Humor & Tiramisu Mooncake.

Look at the actual mooncake vs the catalogue one!!!!

AFTER tasting:

Left : Black Humor (RM12.45) is made of chocolate hazelnut snowskin + low sugar chocolate white lotus + Pistachio + Oreo.

The catalogue shows inner lotus to be bright in colour but in actual, it's ALLL the way black from outside to inside! Where is the oreo which is supposed to be in pieces? Huh? Blended into the lotus paste already?

Can you see the nuts on top of the mooncake in the catalogue vs the actual? OMG! It's so little in actual!

Taste wise, simply awful chocolate, eliminate white lotus straightaway!

Right : Tiramisu (RM12.45) is made of coffee + low sugar white lotus paste + rich cheesy flavour.

It is the 2008 best sellers according to the catalogue! OMG! The cheesy flavour really made the taste super weird! Kiam kiam + coffee! Yucks!

Pearl Palace (Invited Review)

Invited Review @ Pearl Palace Chinese Restaurant, Setia Pearl Island Country Club.

Price is not available at the moment of posting. Rating is exclusive of price consideration.

Fish Steamboat 鱼锅 (Medium RM45)

The milky white fish soup base was simply awesome! I love its fresh sweetness coupled with ginger taste. [My rating : 9/10]

You can find some fried fish hidden inside there too.

How could one ever resist such temptation uh?! :) Grouper (koay kow)!

Steamed Beancurd with Salted Egg and Prawn 百花蛋香豆腐蒸凤尾虾 [My rating : 6/10]
(Small RM25, Medium RM35, Large RM45)
The combination of salted egg shreds + beancurd + prawn made this a healthy dish. It's an unusual combination but I personally found that it needs more 'umph'.

Braised Fresh Mushroom with Bamboo Shoots 浓汤竹笙扒玉菇 [My rating : 6/10]
(Small RM15, Medium RM22, Large RM35)
I found this dish to be rather bland if it's to be served as one of the dishes for wedding dinners or corporate dinners. This dish comes with enoki mushrooms (金针菇) in a bowl shape, surrounded by bamboo shoots and tomatoes at the edge. Some people don't eat tomatoes, see?! It could be rather headache when comes to serving equal portion to everybody.

Braised Dry Abalone and Sea Product in Claypot 小干鲍烩海味煲 [My rating : 8.5/10]
(Small RM80, Medium RM160, Large RM220)

Japanese dry abalone, scallop, sea cucumber, dried oyster and green peas are all braised in a claypot here. If i were to be mean, I would say that the abalone was still a little bit chewy.

Deep Fried Chicken With Marmite Sauce 妈蜜鸡 [My rating : 7/10]
(Small RM12, Medium RM20, Large RM30)
The fragance of this deep fried marmite chicken immediately filled the air when this dish was served.

Pomfret in Two Preparation 俩味斗昌 [ My rating : 7/10]
(Market Price)
The fish was solid in flesh but served in a drier version, not like the usual steamed Thai or Teochew style.

Fried Wet Hor Fun with Slice Abalone 鲍片湿炒河粉 [My rating : 8/10]
(Small RM12, Medium RM24, Large RM38)
Sliced abalone served on hor fun. Some of the hor fun was in lumps, it should be looked into by the management for the quality consistency of their suppliers. Minus this flaw, it would be superb as I found the taste to be ngam-ngam-hoe!

Wet Hor Fun 滑蛋河 (without slice abalone)
(Small RM12, Medium RM24, Large RM38)

Floggers in action.

Double Boiled Aloe Vera with Red Dates 冰糖芦荟红枣
[My rating : 9/10]
(Small RM8, Medium RM18, Large RM30)
Some claimed it to be rather sweet for them but I found it perfect to my liking (oh no.....is this an alarm? ) :)

The combination is SIMPLE yet nice. see?! Of course lah, how one gonna obtain good and edible aloe vera is another lesson to learn.

Porcupine little mooncake vs Equatorial mooncake

I have had enough mooncakes for the past one and half weeks but these two really worth mentioning.

Porcupine Little Mooncake (刺蝟小月餅) . Homemade by Mdm Heng.

Mini Super Cute! The size is ~4.0cm (L) x ~3.5cm (W) x ~ 3.0 cm (H).

It uses shanghai mooncake dough. Crispy outer layer. Inside is stuffed with tau sar (red bean).

Equatorial mooncake.

Nice packaging uh! The 'jade' is plastic in actual.

Got EQ logo one leh! See?!

Tau Sar (red bean), Pandan Lotus Single Yolk, Lotus Single Yolk, Greentea. Traditional plain flavour is the best!

Happy Mooncake Festival!!!
